Real Radio Insulators for the Real World

Austin designs and manufactures a wide range of radio insulators for antennas operating from Medium Wave (MW) to Long Wave (LW) to Very Low Frequency (VLF) band. Our standard range of Insulators are capable of mechanical working loads up to 250 tons while withstanding 250 kV rms at Radio Frequencies (RF). They are also capable of surviving lightning impulse values in excess of 8,000 kV.

Insulator 1   Austinís Radio Insulators have been proven to be capable of surviving the most extreme environmental working conditions in thousands of antennas around the world.

Austinís Radio Insulators are specifically designed for RF application only, and are not low grade power transmission line (50/60 Hz) devices modified to mimic real radio insulators.

Power line insulators do not have a proven history of working at RF voltages with exposure to high lightning impulse values on tall towers. Furthermore, these devices were only designed to meet the less demanding world of power transmission (50/60 Hz).

Although power line insulators have been tried many times in various configurations over the past 70 years, their use in high RF fields with high mechanical loads and severe environmental conditions has not met with wide-scale acceptance.

Austinís insulators are used throughout the world in the largest and highest powered radio antennas, operating in the harshest of conditions down to small, low power beacons and repeaters. They have been designed using the most state-of-the-art finite element analysis software together with the latest in three dimensional electric field analysis software.

The results of this analysis are then verified against real world data collected by empirical methods. New designs are tested at RF in Austinís lab, as well as the most advanced military and private facilities in the world.

It is estimated that there are over 100,000 Austin designed and built Radio Insulators in service today, with a derived mean time between failures (MTBF) of well over 1,000 years.
